Roberta Metsola will serve as the leader of the European Parliament for the next two and a half years. He can be re-elected for the same term in January 2027.

The new composition of the European Parliament held its first meeting in Strasbourg and re-elected Roberta Metsola to a new term as President of the European Parliament. It was found out on Tuesday, July 16.

562 deputies out of 699 who participated in voting voted for his candidacy; So, Roberta Metsola won the first round with an absolute majority, reports a Ukrinform correspondent.

623 deputies took part in the voting. Metsola, representing the European People’s Party, received 562 votes, more than the minimum required of 312. His rival, representative of the Left group Irene Montero, received only 61 votes.

Metsola will now serve as the leader of the European Parliament for the next two and a half years. He can be re-elected for the same term in January 2027.

Earlier, Roberta Metsola said that the renewed European Parliament will continue to support Ukraine and the European Union’s enlargement policy.
