Training at UFMG’s Hospital das Clínicas aims to promote inclusive and welcoming care for the LGBTQIA+ community
The training sought to address the challenges that LGBT+ people face in accessing healthcare, such as prejudice, lack of preparation and resistance on the part of professionals. LaEIC coordinator and professor in the Department of Psychology, Bruno Cardoso, highlights that these challenges can intensify the suffering of these people: “Untrained professionals can reproduce microaggressions that aggravate the suffering of the LGBTQIAPN+ population.”
The training, aimed at students and health professionals, was led by Bruno Cardoso and psychologist Ana Clara Braga, who is a student in the Postgraduate Program in Psychology: Cognition and Behavior. The course was divided into two sessions. The first session covered basic concepts about sexual and gender diversity, as well as issues related to the mental suffering to which this population is most exposed. The second session focused on developing care approaches that are welcoming and affirming.
Cardoso emphasizes the importance of disseminating knowledge in an accessible and inclusive way: “Our goal is to promote reflection on microaggressions that can occur in care and develop multicultural skills to improve treatment of the LGBTQIAPN+ population.”
The initiative aims not only to raise awareness of the specific needs of this population, but also to improve health practices, ensuring a safer and more respectful environment for everyone.
