The rapid rise in COVID-19 infections in a new wave of autumn is pushing German hospitals to their limits, the president of the Association of German Hospitals warned today. Gerald Gass.
The number of beds occupied by positive patients has increased by 50% compared to last week, and hospitals are facing “extremely difficult weeks,” he told the RND media group.
For his part, the director of the Intensive Care Registry (DIVI), Christian Karagiannidisexplained to the same media group that in some regions of Germany there are already pockets in which there are almost no free beds in intensive care units.
According to DIVI data, there are currently around 1,660 coronavirus-positive patients in German intensive care units, of which approximately 50% are in need of treatment for the consequences of the virus.
Infections among hospital staff and the resulting sick leave pose an additional challenge for health centers that already operate with a chronic shortage of specialists.
That is why the Association of Hospitals does not exclude that in the near future some centers will have to once again cancel non-urgent interventions or close certain departments for new hospitalizations.
According to data from Robert Koch Institute (RKI) of Virology, on Tuesday, the seven-day cumulative incidence was 799.9 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, while there were 374 a week ago and 220.9 a month ago.
Pandemic numbers
On the other hand, in the last 24 hours, 136,748 new cases have been identified and 199 deaths have been recorded.
However, this statistic is only influenced by positive results detected by PCR tests, which are currently only performed in selected cases, so experts suggest that the real figure is three to five times higher.
Germany’s health authorities believe the country is at the start of a seventh wave and have warned it could be accompanied by a flu epidemic this time around, after pandemic restrictions reduced cases last winter.
So the Minister of Health Karl Lauterbachrecommended that people over 60 receive a combination of a fourth dose of an antiviral drug—a second booster dose—and an influenza vaccine. (EFE)
