Ukraine confirms the commitment to human freedoms, formed by the UN’s expression of indigenous people’s rights, and guarantees its territory the maintenance and development of ethnic, cultural, linguistic and religious identity.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of the International Day of indigenous peoples on August 9 called on the world’s community to judge Russia’s repression of Russian policy related to the indigenous peoples of Ukraine, in particular the Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks.
“The indigenous people of Ukraine – Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Crimeans – are an integral part of our history, culture and modern life,” the statement emphasized. – “Today, all three indigenous peoples of Ukraine are suffering from the consequences of the armed invasion of the Russian Federation, especially in the temporary occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea,” the department added.
The Crimean Tatars underwent mass suppression, which includes arrests, torture, political sentences, the ongoing prohibition of mejlis, restriction of the right to use their native language, searches in schools, mosques, homes.
The Karaites and Crimeans are actually missing from the cultural space of the conquered peninsula. Foreign ministry emphasized that Russia is pursuing a policy of forced assimilation, which actually leads to the destruction of the autochthonous environment in a temporary covered peninsula.
The mass of the Russian population in Crimea occurs at the same time -at the same time removing indigenous people from their own land, the destruction of historical monuments, sacred areas, as well as a change in the language environment.
The department recalled that one of the major international tools for protecting the rights of indigenous peoples of Ukraine was the Crimean’s international platform – a diplomatic platform where human rights, including indigenous people’s rights, were priorities.
So, now Ukraine is calling for a international community:
-
judge the repression and discrimination policy of the Russian Federation related to the indigenous peoples of Ukraine;
-
Support associated international initiatives, including within the UN framework;
-
contribute to the protection of the culture, linguistics and spiritual heritage of the indigenous peoples of Crimea;
-
Request the initiation of legal consequences for the state of the cupan.
Remember that in 2021 the RADA approved the law to indigenous people. Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Crimeans are recognized as indigenous people in Ukraine. The law prohibits the denial of their ethnic or ethnic identity.
The President has signed a law to native people
