A new map of Venusian volcanoes will help further the search for signs of recent geological activity on this planet.
American scientists from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, using archival images of the Magellan spacecraft, which studied Venus 30 years ago, created the most complete map of volcanoes on this planet. They have 85 thousand there. Space writes about it.
Researchers say this is the most complete map of volcanoes in all the worlds of the solar system.
The author of the new map, Paul Byrne, noted that there are probably more volcanoes on Venus.
Scientists also divided all known volcanoes on Venus into three groups by size:
-
Small volcano, up to 5 km wide;
-
Moderate volcanoes, from 5 to 100 km in diameter;
-
Large volcano, from 100 km in diameter.
It is worth noting that for many years scientists believed that there were no active volcanoes on this planet. However, it turns out that there are more volcanoes on Venus than on any other planet.

Recall that early researchers from the University of California led by Stephen Caine discovered that the reason why the year on Venus is shorter than a day is the dense atmosphere of the planet with strong winds.
