Farmers plan to continue blocking the Medica-Shegini border with Ukraine on January 4.
Polish farmers are threatening to block the Medika-Shegini border crossing again. The border protest may continue on Thursday, January 4. RAR reported this in connection with the protest leader Roman Kondruv.
According to him, the strikers will continue their protest if they do not receive a written guarantee that their demands will be met. Today, January 3, negotiations will take place on the demands of the protesters.
Polish farmers presented three main demands to the Polish government:
-
making additional payments to buy corn prices, which they consider too low in the region;
-
extension until 2024 of the program for providing low-interest loans to farmers, introduced in connection with the influx of Ukrainian grain to the Polish market;
-
maintaining the agricultural tax rate, which is planned to be raised in 2024, at the level of 2023.
“We would like to receive such assurances in writing. I will discuss this on Wednesday (January 3 – ed.), particularly with Deputy Minister of Agriculture Stefan Krajewski… It is important for us to receive written assurance that our requests are “Fulfilled. If the minister cannot give such an assurance, let the prime minister write it,” Kondruv said.
In addition, he noted that he has been in contact with the police and the crisis group associated with the border conflict. Therefore, he said that “everyone is ready to extend the protest.”
We remind you that the Polish farmers started their protest on November 23, and the blockade at the Medika-Shegini checkpoint ended on December 24.
