To investigate the effect of sound on cellular activity, scientists have developed a system for “bathing” cultivated cells in acoustic waves:
- Initially, scientists attached the vibration sensor to the shelf upside down. Then, using a digital audiopler connected to the amplifier, they sent sound signals through the converter to a diaphragm attached to a cup with cell culture. This allowed researchers to radiate acoustic pressure in the physiological sound on cultivated cells;
- After this experiment, the researchers analyzed the effect of sound on the cells using RNA, microscopy and other methods.
The results showed that cells respond to the audible range of acoustic stimulation at the cellular level. In particular, scientists have registered a significant effect of sound on inhibiting the differentiation of adipocytes – a process by which preliminary points turn into fat cells, which opens up the possibility of using acoustics to control the condition of cells and tissues.
Since the sound of intangible, acoustic stimulation is a non -invasive, safe and instant tool, which will probably benefit medicine and health, the researchers say.
Scientists also identified about 190 genes sensitive to sound, noted the effect of sound on the control of the activity of cellular adhesion and observed a subcellular mechanism through which sound signals are transmitted.
In addition to the provision of convincing evidence of the perception of sound at the cellular level, this study also challenges the traditional concept of perception of sound with living beings, which is that it is mediated by susceptible organs such as the brain.
