The European Union should change the decision -making system and abandon the practice of blocking the decisions of individual states, the German leader believes.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said the European Union can no longer use a national veto in foreign policy decisions if it wants to retain a leading role in global politics, Reuters reports.
Scholz noted that Russia’s war with Ukraine makes European unity more urgent and reinforces the need to end “selfish blocking” of European solutions by individual member states.
“We simply cannot afford to continue to maintain national vetos, for example, on foreign policy – if we want to be heard in a world where major geopolitical players are competing,” the chancellor stressed.
He also noted that Germany will soon submit its proposals to a joint EU migration policy, building EU defense, technological sovereignty and democratic stability of the bloc countries.
Especially intensified the discussion about the abandonment of the principle of solidarity in the approval of the sixth package of sanctions against Russia. Hungary, which is heavily dependent on Russia’s energy resources, has long blocked the latest package of measures regarding Russia’s energy resources. Budapest only approved it after it was freed from Russia’s oil import embargo. Also, due to Budapest’s position, Patriarch Kirill was not included in the list of sanctions.
