The purpose of introducing duties is to reduce the hope of European states to imports from the Russian Federation and Belarus.
The European Commission (EC) has adopted a proposal to introduce duties to a number of agricultural products from Russia and Belarus, as well as some nitrogen fertilizer. On Tuesday, January 28, the European Commission’s press service said.
Agricultural products, affected by new roles, have reached 15% of agricultural imports from Russia in 2023. Previously, these goods were not under the rise of duties.
“The introduced tariffs will support the growth of domestic production and the EU fertilizer industry, which suffered during the energy crisis. It will also allow the supplies to vary from third countries,” the statement.
At the same time, the European Commission emphasizes that EU’s duties for agricultural products and fertilizers from the Russian Federation will not affect Russian exports to third countries through community territory.
The Commission’s proposal will now be considered by the European Parliament and the EU Council by voting a qualified majority in accordance with the legal basis of a joint trade policy.
EU authorities are working to ensure that 16 packages of sanctions against Russia are ready in February.
And on January 27, the EU expanded economic penalties against Russia for another six months – until July 31. Hungary at the last moment agreed to expand sanctions against Russia. Budapest has made concessions in exchange for accepting a statement to consider his fears about “energy security”.
