For the Przewalski horse, twins in a litter in the wild are extremely rare. The reserve hopes to have almost a full herd by next year.
Przewalski’s horse twins were spotted in the Chernobyl Radiation-Ecological Biosphere Reserve. The reserve reported this on Wednesday, October 2, noting that twins are extremely rare in the wild.
“Perhaps a baby was adopted from a dead animal. The young Przevalians are in good physiological condition, however, the fact that the foals are the same age (obviously born later and, as in the last ten day of September, is quite small. ) and holding tightly to the wife and each other, says more about the fact that this is a family,” the message said.
The reserve noted that the main thing is still to come – if their mother can feed them and spend the winter together.
“A spotted herd of three adult horses and one stallion should save six vulnerable youngsters from many wolves in a few years,” the biologists reported.
The reserve considers that the herd between Lelev and the city of Pripyat now has one foal, three adult mares, two one and a half year old mares and four this year. Next year there is a possibility of having almost a full herd of five mares.
“Now it’s colder, the animals are actively gaining fat to gain strength before winter Although this year it’s not easy because of the drought, fire and green plants that are not as much as last year,” said the reserve. They added that there is every reason to hope that the herd, as well as the rare Przewalski twins, will survive.
It was previously reported that Przhevalsky horses were brought into the exclusion zone in 1998 from the Askania-Nova nature reserve. Since then, the number of animals has increased many times.
