The signatories called for refraining from using or threatening to use weapons of mass destruction and attacks on energy facilities. At the same time, the authors of the statement did not indicate to whom they were making such an appeal.
China and Brazil on Friday, September 27, made a joint statement that was not addressed in which they warned against threats to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. A corresponding statement was made public at the UN headquarters during the General Assembly, reports Ukrinform.
“We call for the avoidance of the use or threat of use of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear, chemical and biological,” said the joint statement, which was also signed by ten other countries: South Africa, Turkey , Indonesia. Algeria, Bolivia, Colombia, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Zambia.
According to the statement, “civilian infrastructure, including peaceful nuclear and other energy facilities, should not be the target of military operations.”
The signatory countries also called for the parties to support “a comprehensive and lasting settlement of the conflict through inclusive diplomacy and political means based on the UN Charter.”
The text does not mention Russia, but the reservations are related to recent statements by Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who has again spoken about using nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states.
Let’s recall that on September 25, the Russian leader Vladimir Putin announced the expansion of the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons in the Russian Federation. Now one of them is a massive drone attack. Russia could also use nuclear weapons in an “aggression” against Belarus.
It was also reported that China, Brazil and some other countries of the Global South agreed to create a “Friends of Peace” platform, within the framework of which they plan to promote a peaceful resolution of the “crisis in Ukraine .”
