An aggressor country cannot dictate the terms of a ceasefire in Ukraine, Josep Borrell said.
EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell rejected Vladimir Putin’s so-called “peace initiative” to end the war in Ukraine. He wrote this on the social network X on Saturday, June 15.
In his opinion, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine “does not show a real interest in peace.”
“Putin’s unacceptable demands are aimed at legitimizing aggression and undermining peace efforts, while Russia rearms and prepares for a long war. The aggressor cannot dictate the terms of a ceasefire,” Borrell wrote.
He recalled that the conditions for peace were set in the UN Charter and the General Assembly resolution “on a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine”, supported by 141 countries.
Let’s recall that on June 14, Putin said that he seemed ready for “peaceful negotiations” with Ukraine. But to do this, the Ukrainians must withdraw their troops from four regions, which in Russia are called new regions. Ukraine should also abandon the prospect of NATO membership.
In turn, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky compared Putin’s proposal to Hitler’s Nazism.
