The US Embassy is advising its citizens who also hold Ukrainian citizenship to refrain from traveling to Ukraine.
In Ukraine, the “residence abroad” exception for leaving the country for people with dual citizenship has been removed. Now Ukrainians with dual citizenship cannot leave the country and can be mobilized in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The US Embassy in Ukraine reported this on Tuesday, June 4.
It is noted that this change took effect on June 1, 2024. Since Ukrainian law does not recognize dual citizenship, American-Ukrainian citizens from 18 to 60 years of age may lose the opportunity to leave the country. They will be treated exclusively as citizens of Ukraine.
“Ukrainian law does not recognize dual citizenship. Therefore, during their stay in Ukraine, American-Ukrainian dual citizens are considered exclusively as citizens of Ukraine and are subject to the rights and responsibilities of Ukrainian citizens,” said of the message.
Previously, people with dual citizenship could freely enter and leave Ukraine if they deregistered their place of residence in Ukraine and registered it in the United States.
The American Embassy stressed that it cannot influence this situation and recommends that citizens carefully study the information on the website of the US State Department, which provides all the necessary information for travelers with dual citizenship.
In particular, the embassy advises men between the ages of 18 and 60 who have two passports or are applying for Ukrainian citizenship to refrain from traveling to Ukraine.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defense explained which Ukrainians abroad must appear at the TCC.
The Cabinet of Ministers extended the postponement of mobilization for three months
