Exceptions will be made for unaccompanied minors, persons facing serious threats to health or safety, and victims of human trafficking.
US President Joe Biden signed on Tuesday, June 4, a decree that completely bans the provision of asylum for migrants detained while illegally crossing the US-Mexico border, Reuters writes.
The document will take effect immediately after midnight. Migrants caught illegally crossing the border can be immediately returned to Mexico. The US Department of Homeland Security said exceptions would be made for unaccompanied children, people facing serious threats to health or safety, and victims of human trafficking.
Biden has stepped up his approach to border security as immigration has become a top issue for Americans ahead of the Nov. 5. His Republican rival, Donald Trump, has made a tough stance on immigration a central theme of his campaign and has promised a massive crackdown if he is re-elected.
At a White House news conference, Biden said that access to asylum would remain available to migrants who register for appointments through a program known as CBP One or use other legal routes instead. who crossed illegally.
“This action will help us control our border and bring order to the process. The ban will remain in place until the number of people trying to enter illegally drops to a level that our system can effectively manage,” Biden said.
The latest data shows an average of 4,300 people were arrested at the US border each day in April. The ban will be suspended when the number of arrests does not exceed 1,500 within three weeks.
Biden’s order has already been criticized by representatives of both parties.
