In total, in 2023, 862 people were convicted for crimes against “the foundations of the constitutional order and national security” under the articles of treason, espionage and confidential collaboration with a foreign state.
At the same time, almost half of those convicted of treason (15 people) were imprisoned not for specific actions, but for “preparation” and “attempt” to commit a crime.
It was also noted that 38 people received prison terms ranging from 3 to 20 years, and one man was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Among those convicted of treason were two women.
Most of those convicted were between 30 and 49 years old, nine were under 25, and one man was over 60 years old.
Two men were convicted last year under the article Confidential cooperation with a foreign state. One ended up in a colony, the other in a mental hospital.
Nine people were convicted of espionage in Russia last year. Eight of them are foreigners, citizens of CIS countries.
