Social media addiction among young people is a hot topic right now. However, the study found that regular use of TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and online gambling communities can be risky for both adults and youth. Researchers from the University of Tampere in Finland argued that preventive measures should be aimed at eliminating these risks.
The research team studied 1,530 respondents over three years. The study focuses on social media platforms that serve “different functions” and offer “unique experiences” that cater to “diverse user preferences.”
The team used the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT-C) and the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) to assess participants’ behavior.
Lina Savolainen, the study’s author, said that active TikTok users and members of gaming communities were “more likely” to experience problem gambling than less active users.
It is known that a score of 0 means that there is no correlation. Conversely, a score of 1.0 means that the two scales are tracking each other accurately. Negative numbers indicate an inverse relationship, that is, one indicator rises when the other falls.

The results, Savolainen said, suggest that users of TikTok and gambling have a higher risk of developing addictions in general.
