Attackers, using encryption viruses they developed, attacked the servers of the world’s leading companies. First, they hacked into the accounts of employees of the victim enterprise, and then distributed malicious software code throughout the corporate ecosystem. Thus, hackers gained access to servers and stole information from them. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine reported this on November 28 on Facebook.
And the data on the victims’ computers after this attack was encrypted and became unusable. Hackers demanded millions in cryptocurrency payments for decryption. In particular, they demanded 450 bitcoins (48 million UAH) for resuming the work of the servers of one of the leading chemical companies in the Netherlands.
Police noted that over several years of criminal activity, the attackers encrypted more than 1 thousand servers of global enterprises and caused damage amounting to more than 3 billion UAH in terms of national currency.
Since 2018, hackers have attacked the world’s most powerful companies in France, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada and the USA. The Ukrainian police, together with colleagues from abroad, identified the 32-year-old leader of the hacker group and his four active accomplices. After more than 30 searches, the group’s activities were suspended.
Let us recall that British intelligence reported that hackers from the Russian Federation tried to attack the Ukrainian military – the attack was aimed at Android mobile devices used by members of the Defense Forces.
