The post of Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China – the head of the Chinese government – was taken by Li Qiang.
On March 11, deputies of the National People’s Congress (NPC) approved his candidacy, and Chinese President Xi Jinping signed a decree on the appointment, Xinhua reports.
Li Qiang has replaced Li Keqiang, who has headed the government since 2013, as Premier of the State Council of China. His second five-year term expired in 2023. Chinese law prohibits holding the post of prime minister for more than two terms.
Before heading the PRC government, Li Qiang led Shanghai as secretary of the Shanghai Party Committee. He was in particular responsible for the quarantine in the city during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was one of the most stringent in China and around the world.
Li Qiang’s political career over the past 20 years has been closely linked to Xi Jinping. Political analysts expected Li Qiang to lead the government after Xi Jinping became the first chairman in history to be re-elected for a third term on March 10. Unlike the premiers of the State Council, for the heads of the PRC, the restriction of two five-year terms was removed.
