Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky considered a petition proposing to officially change Russia’s name to Muscovy.
As the petition author notes, this name is used in European and some Asian languages. In many historical maps of the 16th-19th centuries, made in Europe before and after the renaming of the Moscow kingdom to the All-Russian Empire, this name also appears. In fact, Russia has existed for only 301 years – since October 22, 1721, when the Moscow Tsar Peter I proclaimed the Moscow Tsardom the Russian Empire.
In his response to the petition, Volodymyr Zelenskyy pointed out that “the issue raised in the petition requires careful study both in the historical and cultural context and taking into account the possible international legal consequences.”
The head of state said that he spoke with Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal with a request to work on this issue together with scientific institutions.
It was previously reported that the petition to change the name of the Russian Federation to Muscovy has obtained the required number of signatures.
Recall that earlier Zelensky responded to a petition to remove the orders of deputies from the Opposition Platform for Life.
