China considers Taiwan its own territory. Since US Congress Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August 2022, the Chinese military has been conducting regular exercises near the island.
Chinese President Xi Jinping intends to send his army within four years to invade the island of Taiwan. This was announced on Friday, February 3, in a speech at Georgetown University, CIA Director William Burns, reports the Japanese NHK.
Burns cited US intelligence data and noted that China’s military command had received instructions from the head of state to be ready to attack Taiwan by 2027.
“This does not mean that he intends to launch an invasion in 2027 or any other year, but it is a reminder of the seriousness of his intentions and his ambitions,” the CIA director said.
At the same time, he urged not to underestimate the intentions of the Chinese leader.
Beijing has repeatedly said that “Taiwan Province” must be controlled in order to restore the territorial integrity of the PRC. However, Taipei insists that the island of Taiwan is a Free Territory of the Republic of China, while excluding mainland China. A self-governing democracy seceded from the PRC in 1949.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden said that the United States intends to defend Taiwan in the event that China attacks the island.
