Researchers recommend keeping a diary and recording what position you feel is best.
Scientists have recently studied the subject of sleep and its effect on our health, and the results of the study are interesting and useful. In particular, the best sleeping positions have been established, which can have a positive effect on the quality of our rest and the general condition of the body. The BBC reported it.
To learn more about the best sleeping position, researchers have tried different methods, such as filming people while they sleep or using devices that track their movements.
So, scientists from Hong Kong have developed a device that, based on infrared radiation, can adjust a person’s posture even through a thick blanket.
Danish researchers used small motion sensors attached to volunteers’ thighs, upper back and shoulders to determine their favorite sleeping position. They found that in bed, people spend slightly more than half of their time on their sides, about 38% on their backs, and 7% on their stomachs.
They were also able to establish that with age, people sleep more and more time on their side. Whereas children aged three and over spend about the same amount of time in all three positions. Meanwhile, babies often sleep on their backs, as they are placed in the crib this way for safety reasons.
Studies have shown that people who sleep on their right side sleep better than their left, followed by those who sleep on their backs.
Another study looked at seafarers working on commercial container ships and found that respiratory ailments such as snoring were more common when seafarers slept on their backs. Lying on your side has also been found to help clear your upper airways and prevent the tongue from sinking to the back of your throat, which reduces snoring.
Western Australian researchers monitored the volunteers’ bedrooms for 12 hours each night using automatic cameras. They found that those who woke up regularly with neck pain spent more time sleeping in a hunched position on their side. And people who sleep more upright on their side experience less neck pain.
In a study of older people participating in a fitness program in Portugal, people with back pain were asked to sleep on their sides, and those with neck pain were asked to try sleeping on their backs. After four weeks, 90% of participants said their pain was reduced.
In addition, people suffering from heartburn should sleep on their left side, because doctors suggest that sleeping on the left side allows you to keep the point of transition of the esophagus to the stomach above the level of stomach acid. . While sleeping on the right side tends to relax the lower esophageal sphincter more, allowing acid to pass through the upper esophagus.
As for sleeping on the stomach, this position leads to the rapid appearance of wrinkles on the face.
