Archaeologists have discovered new treasures such as glasses and dishes at the site of Pompeii (south), a city buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius two millennia ago, especially in an area plundered by smugglers for many years and now legally restored and excavated.

“This excavation allows us to see how far we can go by working together across institutions, in this case between the Archaeological Park and the public prosecutor’s office,” site director Gabriel Zuchtrigel said in a statement today.

The area under study is a buried villa, or rather its outbuildings, in the area of Civita Juliana, north of the ancient walls of this city, which was destroyed by a violent eruption in 79 AD.

These are important excavations because the area has been plundered for years by “tumbaroli” or smugglers who dug tunnels to get into the buildings Pompeii buried under the ash of the volcano to steal and sell the treasure they guarded.

The protection of Civita Julian has been a priority lately, and in 2019 the Archaeological Park Pompeii signed an agreement with the prosecutor’s office of Torre Annunziata to increase surveillance and stop the looting of this precious heritage.

raider tunnels

It was in the same place that an imposing four-wheeled ceremonial float decorated with bronze and tin was discovered in February 2021, the image of which went around the world, as well as the bodies of two people who died in the eruption.

The excavated villa is located under a road where cars had passed a few days ago and it was necessary to block traffic so that it could be explored. In addition, the entire area was “mined” by looting tunnels.

So far, overturned ceramic cutlery and cups have been found along the walls of the servants’ quarters of the sprawling housing estate.

It is assumed that these objects are in the same place and in the same position as at the time of the catastrophe, for how long time and history stopped. Pompeii.

Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano stressed the importance of fighting smugglers and protecting this “pride of Italy” and “a unique heritage throughout the world.”

“These finds demonstrate the commitment and ability of the state to fight the plague of clandestine excavations and the trade in archaeological property and represent an important response to the damage that has been done over the years,” he said.

Tracking this entire area, now restored and controlled, will provide new data on life in this Roman city, which remained under pyroplast material until excavations began in the mid-18th century.

(As reported by EFE)

“Espacio Vital”: Dr. Cesar Munaiko – Director General of the National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Control of Diseases (CDC) Minsy reported that so far 91 people have died from different regions as a result of traffic accidents, electric shocks, and from -caused by collapsed roofs, walls, and also due to river landslides.
