Discover some K-pop groups that, in addition to the way they are known internationally, can also be called by other names
Within K-pop, it is common that, before a group debuts, companies choose names for the formation that have some type of meaning that fits with the concept that the group will adopt in their promotions.
NCT, for example, is an abbreviation for “Neo Culture Technology”, a term that refers to the project created by Lee Sooman, founder of SM Entertainment, and whose intention was to create a group with infinite members, divided into different sub-units. Today, however, the idea of unlimited members has been abolished, and the boy group has completed its lineup with 26 idols.
Another example is LE SSERAFIM, a name that emerged as an anagram of the phrase “IM FEARLESS”, which in Portuguese means “I AM WITHOUT FEAR”, in addition to also making reference to the word ‘Le Serafim’ which means the six-winged angel — number initial number of members before leaving Kim Garamtwo months after debut.
Furthermore, to comply with international standards, many groups also have names translated into different languages, mainly English and Korean.
With this in mind, RECREIO separated a list of five groups that have more than one name. Check out!
1. BTS
Nowadays, everyone knows the formation made up of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V It is Jungkook just like BTS, however, the acronym is actually an abbreviation of its Korean name Bangtan Sonyeondan (Bulletproof Scouts, in Portuguese). Furthermore, since 2017, the group has also adopted “Beyond The Scene” as a new meaning for the acronym BTS.
2. LOONA

Known internationally as LOONA, the name of the girl group formed by Blockberry Creative came about through the rearrangement of the first consonant of the spelling of their original name (이달의 소녀, or Idalui Sonyeo in romanized form) into Hangul “ㅇㄷㅇㅅㄴ”, which, if rearranged to ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ, it’s similar to LOONA in English. Furthermore, Idalui Sonyeo can be translated to “Girl of the Month”, referring to the beginning of the group’s project where, each month, a member was introduced, totaling 12 members.
3. Girls’ Generation

In South Korea, Taeyeon, Tiffany, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona It is Seohyun are known as 소녀시대 (Sonyeo Shidae), translated into Portuguese as “Generation of Girls”, or “Girls’ Generation”, in English, the way they are known internationally. On the internet, you can also find fans referring to the group as GG (short for Girls’ Generation) or SNSD (short for the romanized version of Sonyeo Shidae).
4. TVXQ!

Unlike the other groups on this list, TVXQ! is actually an abbreviation for their Chinese name 東方神起 (Tong Vfang Xien Qi), which can be translated into Portuguese as “Ascending Gods of the East”. In Korea, they are known by the Korean name translation, 동방신기 (Dong Bang Shin Ki).
5. WJSN

Those just starting out in K-pop can often get confused with the pronunciation of the name WJSN. The acronym of the Starship Entertainment girl group, which is widely used on the internet to refer to the group, refers to its name in Korean 우주소녀 (Uju Sonyeo), which can be translated as “Cosmic Girls”, in Portuguese, or “ Cosmic Girls”, in English, is how they are internationally recognized. The name refers to the group’s concept, which featured 13 members responsible for representing a designated constellation. Today, however, the formation has only 10 members.
