Inside Out 2 hits theaters in a few weeks, and the film’s director revealed some curiosities surrounding the discarded emotions; know more!
Inside Out 2 hits Brazilian cinemas in just a few weeks, and both animation fans and the Pixar studio themselves are eager to see the final result of the sequel after almost ten years of waiting.
Recently, last April, during a press conference promoted by Pixar (via Collider), the film’s director, Kelsey Manntogether with the producer Mark Nielsonreleased some more news about the emotions that will arise in Riley’s mind during adolescence. Mann reveals that, originally, the protagonist should have nine new emotions:
“My first thought, during the first conversation we had, was that nine new emotions would be established. I really wanted Alegria to feel overwhelmed by all of them, but then I thought it would seem like a lot. And then, you wouldn’t be able to keep up. There were so many emotions, and they all canceled each other out because you couldn’t keep up with everyone. And then, we decided that everything could be simplified.”
Of the nine new emotions, Mann and the creative team narrowed the number down to four, which are presented to the audience during the trailers. Along with Anxiety, we will see Envy, Embarrassment and Boredom.
The director also commented that three of the discarded emotions would be “Schadenfreude”, Jealousy and Guilt. The first comes from a German word that means “joy at someone else’s expense”, while the second and third are practically the closest sisters of Envy and Anxiety, there is no need to include them in the animation:
The baggage that Anxiety carries into the control room came from Guilt, because it was also in my initial plans along with the other nine new emotions. I actually wanted a giant luggage cart like one in a hotel. You know, when you go to Disney, you take all of your kids’ things, and that adds up to a lot of luggage. And when Anxiety hits, the primal emotions kick in and they’re like, ‘Wow, what is this? Who is he? What is all this?’ And then this little character could show up and say, ‘Hi, I’m Guilt. Sorry, I have a lot of baggage.’ And when I thought about it, it was such a good joke. But then we ended up cutting that emotion, because it didn’t really add anything to the story. I think anxiety also has a lot of baggage [risos]so we gave her everything.”
“Inside Out 2” premieres on June 20th. The final trailer for the animation was released last Tuesday, 4th; check out!
