Europe aims to close the battery gap and thereby contribute to climate neutrality.
The EU will build 30 battery factories to achieve energy independence and reduce carbon emissions. This was announced on March 3 by the press service of the European Commission following a meeting of the European Battery Alliance (EBA) chaired by EC Vice President Maros Sefcovic.
It was noted that by 2022 the total investment in the “battery ecosystem” of the European Union, which includes more than 160 industrial projects with a total capacity of about 70 GWh, will exceed 180 billion euros.
Participants in the meeting emphasized that the EBA plays an important role in supporting the EU’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
The strategic plan for the development of the battery industry includes the creation of 30 lithium-ion “gigafactories”, an increase in the share of battery power plants and electric vehicles.
However, the battery industry still faces many structural challenges, such as shortages of skilled labor and raw materials.
It was previously reported that carbon dioxide emissions from energy production in the world will reach a new record in 2022.
