United States President Joe Biden said this Wednesday that the world has shown it is united with the vote in the General Assembly UN condemn the “illegal referendums” held in four regions of Ukraine and attempts Russia annex these territories.
“After nearly eight months of war, the world has shown more unity and determination than ever to hold Russia accountable for its violations,” Trump said in a statement.
Similarly, Biden accused Russia of attacking the essence Charter of the United Nations and in undermining the very foundations of international peace and security.
“The world sent a clear message in its response: Russia it cannot remove a sovereign state from the map. Borders cannot be changed by force. You cannot appropriate the territory of another country,” the US President said.
UN vote
The UN General Assembly this Wednesday approved by an overwhelming majority a resolution condemning “illegal referendums” held in four regions of Ukraine and attempts Russia annex these territories.
The text received 143 votes in favor, 35 abstentions (among others from China, South Africa, India and Cuba) and only 5 votes against (Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Nicaragua and Syria) and illustrates the strong international opposition to the Kremlin’s actions.
Resolution submitted after Russia vetoed a similar one in the Security Council of Nations, demands that Moscow change its actions on the status of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions and demands the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of its troops from the territory of Ukraine.
According to the decision of the General Assembly, referendums and subsequent declarations of annexation “do not have legal force under international law and do not serve as a basis for any change in the status of these regions of Ukraine.”
Russian reaction
Russia called the resolution a “politicized and openly provocative” instrument and assured that it was a confrontational message that “could nullify all efforts in favor of a diplomatic solution to the crisis.”
“This has nothing to do with the defense of international law and the principles Charter of the United Nations. By presenting this project, Western countries are pursuing their own geopolitical goals and are once again trying to use the members of the General Assembly as figureheads,” said Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya.
The vote was a clean win Ukraine and its allies, as the text received even more support than when last March the same body condemned the start of the Russian invasion with a resolution that had 141 votes in favor, 35 abstentions and 5 votes against, causing diplomats from various countries to hardly repeat .
