The Bundeswehr must be better equipped than all the armies in Europe, and Germany itself must be a leader in ensuring European security, the Chancellor said.
Russia is now the main threat to NATO countries and peace in Europe. This is what German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at a Bundeswehr conference in Berlin on Friday, September 16.

“Putin’s Russia is currently the biggest threat to NATO. Through a war against Ukraine, a strong armed nuclear power is trying to redraw the borders in Europe. If Russia achieves this, peace in Europe will be lost for a long time. Only those who do not listen and do not read what President Putin says and writes,” said the German Chancellor.
According to him, the German Armed Forces should be the best equipped in Europe, and Germany itself should be a leader in ensuring European security.
“The Bundeswehr must be the cornerstone of non-nuclear defense in Europe and the most well-equipped army in Europe … Our country has long avoided setting real priorities for the Bundeswehr. Drilling wells, surveillance of humanitarian aid, dealing with the consequences of floods, helping with vaccinations during a pandemic – all this can make a great army like the Bundeswehr. But this is not its main task. Its main task is to protect freedom in Europe,” Scholz said.
He urged European countries to take more responsibility in NATO and reiterated that Germany would fulfill its obligation to allocate 2% of its GDP to defense needs.
Olaf Scholz also spoke in favor of strengthening cooperation with NATO partners in the development of new weapons systems. He expressed his willingness to ease strict export restrictions on Germany, which critics say hinders the expansion of such cooperation.
It will be recalled that on September 13, Scholz had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. After that, the German chancellor said that he saw no change in the Kremlin’s position regarding the war against Ukraine.
