The Head of the Italian government promotes a proposal equivalent to collective guarantees to NATO, but without full membership in the alliance.
Italy’s Prime Minister George Meloni offered European leaders a plan for providing security guarantees for Ukraine in collective help format, which does not provide for NATO membership. This was reported by the Bloomberg news agency.
European leaders are discussing security guarantees for Ukraine, which will prove Kyiv allies within 24 hours to decide: to provide military support if Russia is again attacking or not.
Meloni promotes an offer equal to collective guarantees to NATO, but there is no real membership in the alliance.
The “Light Nato” option is significantly inferior to the collective alliance obligations specified in Article 5 of the NATO Charter, but providing countries that graduate with bilateral agreements with Ukraine quickly agree with their actions in the event of attack.
Allies can provide Kyiv with fast and long -term defense support, economic assistance, as well as imposing sanctions against Russia.
However, it is unclear whether such plans mean the sending of European countries to their military to Ukraine.
Media interlocutors added that the discussions are still ongoing, and the content of the proposals may change.
As we have written, Zelensky has called the basic principles of security guarantees for Ukraine. In his opinion, these guarantees will be released within seven to twice working days.
