Poland will establish the production of nitrocellulose and gunpowder. They are necessary for large-caliber ammunition, which will also be produced in Poland.
The corresponding agreement was signed by the Industrial Development Agency, Grupa Azoty, Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa and Mesko.
Work on the construction of new facilities is planned to begin in Tarnow in about a year.
The development of explosives production capacity is crucial for the future of ammunition production in Poland.
The head of the Ministry of Defense also announced plans to build several ammunition production factories in the country.
Poland is a large country and should be able to produce 155mm ammunition on its own. Our goal is not one plant, but several, and to work with NATO and EU partners to join forces,” said the Polish minister.
According to him, the government will allocate about 3 billion zlotys (about 700 million euros) for the construction of an ammunition plant.
The idea to produce explosives is an attempt to pull Poland’s largest chemical concern, Grupa Azoty, out of the financial crisis.
Grupa Azoty is one of the largest chemical holdings in Europe, specializing in the production of nitrogen and complex fertilizers, as well as engineering plastics, oxoalcohols and plasticizers. The largest shareholder of Grupa Azoty is the State Treasury of Poland (33%).
Increased production of ammunition by Polish enterprises should ensure sufficient supplies in the event of a Russian attack.
