The THAAD battery should bolster Israel’s air defense against the backdrop of Iranian missile attacks.
The United States announced the deployment of its THAAD missile defense system with an American crew to Israel. Pentagon Speaker Pat Ryder announced this on Sunday, October 13.
At the behest of President Joe Biden, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin approved the deployment of a THAAD battery to Israel to bolster Israel’s air defense following Iranian missile attacks on April 13 and October 1, the statement said. The Pentagon emphasized that the THAAD battery would complement Israel’s built-in air defense system.
“These actions underscore the firm commitment of the United States to the defense of Israel and Americans in Israel from any subsequent ballistic missile attack by Iran,” the statement said.
The Pentagon called it part of “broader changes the US military has made in recent months to strengthen Israel’s defenses and protect Americans from attacks by Iran and Iran-linked militias.”
The US defense department also recalled that this is not the first time the US has deployed a THAAD battery in the region. Last year, after the October 7 attacks, the president ordered the deployment of a THAAD battery in the Middle East to protect American troops. And in 2019, the United States deployed a THAAD battery to Israel for exercises.
It will be recalled that on October 1, the Israel Defense Forces began a limited ground operation in southern Lebanon. The Israelis also killed the leader of the Hezbollah movement, Hassan Nasrallah.
In response, Iran fired 180 ballistic missiles at Israel. He promised to give an answer.
