10 major nodes associated with the nuclear power plant are under threat. Destroying them could plunge the country into darkness and trigger a radiation emergency.
Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power grid could lead to an emergency at one of the three operating nuclear power plants still controlled by Kiev. The Minister of Energy German Galushchenko announced this in an interview with Bloomberg.
It was noted that there are thousands of electrical substations in Ukraine, but ten main nodes associated with nuclear power plants are under threat. Destroying them could plunge the country into darkness and trigger a radiation emergency.
Galushchenko added that Russian strikes pose nuclear risks closer to Ukraine’s borders with the European Union.
He explained that substations provide stability by regulating the transmission of high voltage electricity. Unlike fossil or renewable sources, nuclear plants require a constant flow of electricity to maintain safety systems. Without it, the fuel in the reactor core could overheat, which could result in an uncontrolled and dangerous release of radiation.
Let us recall that Russian missile attacks on power substations essential for the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants are the result of the Kremlin’s conscious decision to threaten the world with a nuclear disaster without a direct attack in nuclear power plants. This was stated by the acting permanent representative of Ukraine to international organizations in Vienna, Victoria Kuvshinnikova, at a regular meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council.
