Lithuania blocked the bridge to Russia’s Kaliningrad region with “dragon’s teeth” and “hedgehogs”.
The head of the department, Laurynas Kaščiūnas, explained that the bridge is the property of Russia, so Vilnius can only install obstacles in front of the bridge.
In addition to all the above measures, it is also planned to install backup obstacles on the supports – sets of metal beams. The enemy will also be hampered in fording not only by the steep slopes of the river, but also by mines, dragon teeth, hedgehogs and barbed wire. It is important to be prepared for anything that happens, – said the Lithuanian Minister of Defense.
The head of the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, Agnė Bilotaitė, noted that this line of defense is another step towards strengthening the protection of Lithuania’s state border, which is the external border of the EU and NATO.
The article notes that 27 zones are currently being created near the borders with the Russian Federation and Belarus, which will be protected by engineering means. By the end of 2024, the Lithuanian army plans to receive “dragon’s teeth”, prefabricated “hedgehogs”, “Spanish horses” and concrete road barriers worth more than 4 million euros. At the same time, the state additionally plans to purchase “dragon’s teeth” for about 2.5 million euros.
Other counter-mobility measures are also planned: deepening drainage ditches, forming tree alleys along roads and maintaining existing forest areas up to 20 kilometers from the border and around main and intermediate roads, strengthening the Neman fords on the border with Russia. The development of the mine capabilities of the Lithuanian army will significantly increase the effectiveness of all other counter-mobility measures, the Defense Ministry adds.
The department concluded that in order to implement all mobility measures within 10 years, Lithuania needs about 600 million euros.
