German naval captain Michael Giess believes that the main task of the Bundeswehr is to be ready for war.
Germany must be prepared for a potential military conflict within five years. This is what the commander of the Hamburg regional command, naval captain Michael Giess, said in an interview with Die Welt.
According to him, for 30 years after the Cold War and the division of Germany, the residents wanted to enjoy the “peace dividend” and today the population in the country is still far from perceiving the external threat.
“But my internal clock as a soldier is ticking and telling me that in five years we should be socially resilient enough to withstand an external military threat,” Giess said.
The military noted that all of Germany should be prepared for a potential war.
“This is a major common challenge for politics, the Bundeswehr, business and society in a broad sense. It also concerns critical infrastructure – and in particular Hamburg, which serves as a port for the Alliance’s operation and support for NATO,” Giess. emphasized.
Let us recall that earlier a new plan was drawn up in case of war with Germany. The German Ministry of Defense intends to increase the number of armed forces reservists to 60 thousand people.
