We are talking about a model where, according to the relevant documents and measures, a solution will be found, the president said.
In potential negotiations with Russia, the model of mediation between countries is applicable, as in grain corridor agreements. President Vladimir Zelensky said this in an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Trudy Rubin, published on Sunday, June 30.
He asked the president if it would be possible for Ukraine to talk to the head of the Russian regime, Vladimir Putin.
“Ukraine can find a model where, according to the relevant documents and measures, a solution can be found,” Zelensky said.
He clarified that we are talking about a model used in the grain corridor example, when Ukraine did not agree with Russia, but with the UN and Turkey.
They, in turn, took responsibility for us in a trilateral agreement, and then signed an agreement with the Russian side. And that’s how it worked. Two mirror agreements, between which there is the UN and Türkiye, a signature with Ukraine and a separate signature with representatives of Russia. It worked. This grain corridor has been working for a long time,” Zelensky recalled.
According to him, the corresponding model can be used in negotiations on issues of territorial integrity, energy, and free navigation. At the same time, mediators in such negotiations can be not only the United States and partner states from Europe, but the countries of different continents, including Asia, the countries of the Pacific region, Africa and Latin America.
According to the president, a document on a specific crisis can be prepared through the mediation of different states. If it suits Ukraine, it should be considered by mediating countries with Russian representatives.
“So far we only have this model,” Zelensky stressed.
Let’s remember that in June Putin announced the terms of negotiations with Ukraine. They assume Ukraine’s abandonment of its intention to join NATO and the complete withdrawal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye.
In response, Zelensky said that Putin’s proposal was an ultimatum, and his actions were a revival of Nazism.
