The status of a sponsor of terrorism will entail some negative consequences, especially of a humanitarian nature.
The US administration believes that increasing the pressure of sanctions and export restrictions against Russia are more effective measures than recognizing it as a state sponsor of terrorism. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said this in a briefing on Monday, June 24.
“We continue to believe that there are more effective ways to hold Russia accountable for its actions than to designate it as a state sponsor of terrorism,” said a US State Department spokesman.
He explained that such a status would entail several negative consequences, including humanitarian ones.
“So we will continue to pursue them through sanctions against Russian officials, sanctions against Russian companies, export controls that weaken the Russian military machine, and we will do so in the future ,” he says.
Let’s remember that in the United States there have long been proposals to recognize the Russian Federation as a sponsor of terrorism.
The United States currently names four countries as state sponsors of terrorism: Cuba, North Korea, Iran and Syria. Such a designation entails a number of sanctions, including restrictions on foreign aid and a ban on the export and sale of defense products.
