Meanwhile, CBC News reported that Assange has agreed to a deal with US prosecutors in which he will partially plead guilty to conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information. US authorities will stop seeking his extradition, and he will be released after five years spent in a British prison.
The US District Court in the Northern Mariana Islands has set a hearing for June 26 where Julian Assange may plead guilty. CBC News, citing sources, reported that the US Attorney’s Office recommended that he be sentenced to 62 months in prison. Under the terms of the deal, he was sentenced to five years, which he served in a British prison. After the US court hearing, Assange is expected to return to Australia.
Washington previously charged Assange with 18 counts, including violating the espionage law and conspiracy to hack government computers. He faces up to 175 years in prison.
In March of this year, a court in Britain decided to postpone Assange’s extradition to the United States.
