The State Department has “drawn” a membership bridge that should be “clear, short, straight and without obstacles.”
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Washington in July should highlight opportunities for Ukraine’s full integration into Western structures, create a direct and effective bridge to its membership in the Alliance, and discuss ways to succeed the Ukraine on the battlefield. The US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Ambassador James O’Brien, said this on Monday, June 24, Ukrinform reports.
“I think we will see at the end of the NATO summit, and then at the European Political Community (EPC) meeting a week later in the UK, an opportunity to notice that Ukraine is fully integrated into Western structures that the government and its people. expressed their desire for,” said O’Brien .
He also expressed the hope that a “clear bridge” to membership in the North Atlantic Alliance would be provided for Ukraine. This, he said, involved Ukraine in the ongoing implementation of planned reforms to ensure effective and irreversible movement in the Alliance. He noted that the bridge should be “well lit, short, straight and unobstructed.”
In addition, O’Brien noted that he simultaneously expects a positive decision from the European Union, which will open the way for Ukraine to EU membership.
He also emphasized that the United States and other countries of the Alliance want Ukraine to be successful in the conflict. And now, according to him, time is on Ukraine’s side.
“We have seen the dynamics on the battlefield change significantly in recent weeks. And this is another topic of discussion at the NATO summit,” added the US State Department spokesman.
It was previously reported that NATO was arguing about commitments to Ukraine at the summit. The US and Germany have suggested that the alliance promises Ukraine a “bridge” to NATO membership, rather than an “irreversible path” as Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in April, using language supported by Britain and some eastern and central European countries.
