A member of the European Parliament explained why the EP recognized the Russian presidential elections as illegitimate, but Putin himself did not

The European Parliament recognized the so-called Russian presidential elections as illegitimate, but the path itself did not.

    .

This was stated by Lithuanian MEP Petras Auštrevičius on the “We-Ukraine” TV channel.

He noted that the European Parliament adopted two important resolutions this week. The first concerns Russia’s interference and attempts to influence the political situation and the election campaign in the EU, and the second concerns the illegitimacy of elections in Russia.

The second resolution could have been tougher, clearer and more focused. What haven’t we done? We considered the elections and their results illegitimate, but we did not consider the tsar illegitimate. And this is probably due to the fact that there is still no political will to tell this truth face to face, to say that the tsar is naked, the tsar is an impostor, the tsar simply falsified everything, and so on. The falsification of the election results themselves, of course, leads to the conclusion that whoever came to power through this procedure must be illegitimate, but this did not happen. I really regret this. My colleagues who negotiated this resolution seemed to lack some willpower or even consensus. I know that there was an attempt to call Putin “false Vladimir,” but this did not happen. In itself, the recognition of these elections as illegitimate is a serious attempt to correctly determine the situation in Russia, which, I hope, can later lead to the recognition of Putin as a “false president,” Auštrevičius said.

He believes that Putin needs international recognition of the results of the presidential elections. This worsens his position in negotiations with the West.

The resolution “On undemocratic presidential elections in Russia and their illegitimate extension to the occupied territories” was supported by 493 deputies, 11 were against it, and 18 abstained.

They were held in the illegally occupied territories of Ukraine and even inside Russia were neither free nor fair, did not meet basic international electoral standards, and therefore did not have democratic legitimacy.

There were no real alternative candidates, no free media, no credible observers, no political freedoms. This farcical performance by the Russian authorities pursued the only goal – to create the appearance of electoral legitimacy for Putin, his policy of endless internal repression and, above all, an aggressive war against Ukraine, the resolution says.

The document calls for the introduction of sanctions against those involved in organizing and holding illegal elections in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. He also notes that holding elections in these territories is a gross violation of the sovereignty of Ukraine and international law, and “people were forced to vote in the presence of armed Russian soldiers.”

MEPs believe that communication with the traveler should be limited to the topics of restoring peace in the region, the exchange of prisoners of war, the return of abducted children to Ukraine and negotiations on the dismissal of political prisoners.
