Of Japan’s 47 prefectures, only one showed population growth – Tokyo, where the number of residents increased for the second year in a row.
The number of Japanese citizens last year fell by 837 thousand people compared to the previous year and reached 121.2 million. Kyodo reported this on Saturday, April 13.
This indicates that this is the largest recorded decrease since the beginning of observations of the demographic situation in the country since 1950.
According to a demographic study by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, as of October 1 last year, the country’s population, including foreign workers and students who have been in Japan for three months or more, dropped by 595,000 to 124.4 million.
As the agency stressed, there are more pensioners and elderly people in the country, and the number of minors, on the contrary, is decreasing. Thus, the number of residents aged 75 and older increased by 713 thousand, reaching 20.08 million, which became a record. Children from 0 to 14 years old decreased by 329 thousand.
By 2053, Japan’s population is expected to decrease to 100 million people, and in 2065 to 88 million, 38% of whom are people over 60 years old.
Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about the “most difficult demographic challenges” facing Russia. To overcome them, according to Putin, it is necessary to revive the traditions of large families in families.
