Fountains of lava erupt from a fissure in southwest Iceland – the second volcanic eruption since 2024.
A volcano erupted in southwest Iceland for the second time this year. This is the sixth eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021. Reuters reported it.
Dramatic footage shows molten rock flowing from a fissure about 3 km long. Plumes of lava rise into the air to a height of more than 80 m.
According to the weather service, intense seismic activity began around 5:30 am, and the outbreak itself occurred 30 minutes later.
The previous eruption in the area began on January 14 and lasted nearly two days, when lava flows reached the outskirts of the fishing town of Grindavik, where nearly 4,000 residents were evacuated, and several houses were set on fire.
In November, authorities in Iceland began building dams that could help divert the burning lava flow away from homes and critical infrastructure.
Despite the volcanic system’s threat level being downgraded, local authorities have warned of further eruptions as the ground in the area continues to rise due to magma building underground.

It was previously reported that NASA has shown images of a large fissure formed as a result of a volcanic eruption a few kilometers northeast of the city of Grindavik in Iceland.
