The implementation of the law will reduce the influence of the aggressor state in the internal politics of Ukraine.
The Verkhovna Rada adopted in the second reading a bill on amendments to the Law of Ukraine About place names about the decolonization of toponymy and streamlining of the use of geographical names in Ukrainian communities.
According to MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak on Telegram, the document is generally supported by 248 parliamentarians.
It is forbidden to assign names to geographical objects, legal entities and objects of property rights that glorify, preserve, propagate, symbolize Russia (and the Russian Empire), the unique, memorable, historical and cultural sites, cities, dates and events, as well as figures who committed military aggression against Ukraine and other sovereign countries.
The implementation of the law “will ensure the reduction of Russia’s influence on the internal politics of Ukraine and the worldview of the citizens, create requirements for the impossibility of agitation and propaganda activities of people hostile to Ukraine, accelerate the country’s de-Sovietization and de-Russification, and will help strengthen the spirit and morality of the Ukrainian nation,” the explanatory note said.
We remind, earlier the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the petition, proposing to officially change the name of Russia to Muscovy. The Kremlin called it a “ridiculous curiosity.”
