Russian government-backed hackers have stepped up cyber operations since 2021, Google said in a report.
The cyber attacks on Ukraine and NATO countries were organized by five hacker groups linked to the Russian authorities, some of which cooperated with the GRU and the FSB. This is stated in the report “Fog of War: How the Conflict in Ukraine Changed the Cyber Threat Landscape”, based on data from Google Threat Analysis Group (TAG), Mandiant and Trust&Safety, writes Radio Liberty.
Russian government-backed hackers have reportedly stepped up cyber operations since 2021.
In 2022, Russia increased its targeting of users in Ukraine by 250% compared to 2020, and users in NATO countries by more than 300%.
Among the hacker groups organizing cyberattacks on Ukrainian and NATO institutions are FrozenLake, Coldrive, Summit, FrozenBarentz and FrozenVista.
One of the main techniques of these groups of hacker experts is called phishing. Often, hackers attack Gmail mail, as well as the mail services of various government agencies.
The FrozenBarentz group, according to the Google Threat Analysis Group, is associated with the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) and the Russian army, and is engaged in espionage, disinformation, and destruction of information systems.
The Summit group, according to experts, is associated with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). Its employees engage in espionage. The targets of hackers are mainly the security forces of NATO countries. Specifically, in July 2022, the group disguised the malware as a program that could be downloaded from a domain similar to the Azov Regiment website.
The Google report also mentions the Belarusian group Pushcha, which engages in espionage and information campaigns. In 2021, he launched the Ghostwriter campaign: he distributed pro-Russian materials by hacking news sites and posting fake posts there.
Earlier it was reported that hackers from the Russian Federation increased attempts to hack Ukrainian targets by 250%.
