Ukrainian Ambassador Andriy Melnyk has already called on the Berlin authorities to “immediately reverse this dubious decision.”
To avoid conflict situations, Berlin police banned the use of symbols at events on May 8 and 9, which timed the 77th anniversary of the end of World War II and the liberation of Germany from the National Socialism. Ukraine’s flags were also banned, according to the police website.
According to police chief Barbara Slovik, two goals can be achieved: the protection of a worthy commemoration at 15 memorial sites and memorials in Berlin, preventing any conflicts in these areas, as well as actions against “any form of support, approval, glorification or even glorification in Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, especially in conferences.”
“The war should not be allowed to grow beyond the democratic discourse in conflicts or disputes in Berlin,” the statement said.
The rules on memorials include, among other things, a prohibition on the display of such symbols:
-
Flags of Ukraine or Russia
-
Flags of the USSR
-
St. George ribbons
-
military uniforms or parts of the uniform also in modified forms
-
flags with pictures of the territory of Ukraine without territories occupied by the Russian Federation
-
“L/DPR” flags
-
letters V, Z
Nor is it allowed to conduct marches or sing war songs, songs that “could justify or glorify the war in Ukraine.”
However, there are a number of exceptions. World War II veterans, diplomats, representatives and delegations of states were not included in these policies to honor the memory of the states that directly participated in the liberation of Germany.
Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk has already criticized the Berlin authorities for such a decision. In an interview for the RND editorial organization, he called it “a slap in the face to all the people of Ukraine.”
“We are surprised that the Berlin police banned the wearing of Ukrainian flags on May 8 and 9. It was a slap in the face of Ukraine and a slap in the face of the Ukrainian citizens. It not only indicates a lack of tactics, but was a disastrous political decision, ”Melnyk said.
He believes that against this background, Germany’s assurances of unity with Ukraine seem like an empty phrase.
“The public wearing of the Ukrainian flag, as well as the Russian flag, is banned in the capital, where the worst war crimes are carried out day and night against the Ukrainian civilian population and tens of thousands of Ukrainians, women and children, are killed “In cold blood, it’s a big scandal. It not only indicates a lack of tactics, but it’s also a disastrous political decision,” Melnyk said.
At the same time, he also explained that one can understand the efforts of the police to ensure security, but the fact that “the victim and the perpetrators are only equal.”
The Ukrainian ambassador called on local authorities in Berlin to “immediately reverse this dubious decision.”
Earlier it was reported that Andriy Melnyk refused to apologize for his statements about German Chancellor Olaf Scholz: the Ukrainian ambassador called Scholz “a hurt sausage.”
