Fossils of the oldest fish with teeth were discovered by scientists in southern China, in the province of Guizhou.
Chinese scientists discovered the fish Qianodus duplicis, which lived on our planet about 443-419 million years ago. It was then that vertebrates had an evolutionary innovation that determined a further course of development. This is reported by Nature.
It was noted that about 425 million years ago, among jawless fish, the gill arches, which originally served to support the respiratory apparatus, moved forward, becoming jaws. At the same time, the first real teeth appeared.
There are several theories of their origin, which include the development of teeth from fish scales or horns in the throat, but teeth and jaws eventually formed a device for grasping and holding large, resistant to the victim.
So, these teeth are 14 million years older than other finds of paleontologists.
It was previously reported that the unique remains of the world’s largest bird were found in Australia.
