It is a complex mechanism that removes damaged mitochondria from the body and replaces them with new ones.
Israeli scientists have developed a molecule that can increase life expectancy and prevent age-related diseases. By continuously renewing cell viability in damaged tissues, it may lead to the treatment or prevention of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, writes Scitech Daily.
Professor Einav Gross and Shmuel Ben-Sasson from the Faculty of Medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem stated that the current decrease in the effectiveness of the cell’s quality control mechanism leads to the accumulation of damaged mitochondria. It helps a lot in tissue aging.
As Gross explains, mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell and are responsible for producing energy. They can be compared to small electric batteries for the proper functioning of the cells. But they run out all the time. Now scientists know that our cells have a complex mechanism that removes damaged mitochondria and replaces them with new ones.
“We have created an innovative compound of molecules, which in the future can be the basis for a cure for diseases that were previously considered incurable. Moreover, it can also be used as a preventive measure to delay the development of age-related diseases,” the scientists said.
Remember, earlier, scientists created a drug that slowed the rate of decline of memory and thinking in people with early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
