Before the Russian invasion, Ukrainian metal products were mostly exported by sea.

The monthly volume of Ukrainian steel exports fell by 77% due to the blockade of Black Sea ports, wrote Lloyd’s list in connection with the GMK Center.

Before the war, Ukraine exported 1.27 million tons of ferrous metals per month, but in March-August, exports dropped to 0.29 million tons.

At the same time, rail transport cannot replace the loss of maritime logistics.

According to the newspaper, the expansion of the grain corridor for ferrous metal products has not been officially discussed.

According to the director of the GMK Center Stanislav Zinchenko, it is urgent to unblock the Black Sea ports and expand the railway capacity at the EU border to revive the industry.

The publication recalls that Ukraine used to be the fourth largest exporter of iron ore in the world, the second largest exporter of pig iron, the third largest exporter of semi-finished steel products and the eighth largest exporter of long products. used in construction.

Before the war, 97% of pig iron exports and 76% of niche steel exports from Ukraine were transported by sea.

It should be noted that due to the current situation, some MMCs are forced to operate at a loss, and some have stopped completely.

Industry representatives appealed to the country’s leadership with a call to develop a program of state support and incentives for metallurgists.
