We are talking about the Pando Grove, its large size and age make it one of the most unique organisms on the planet.
A University of Utah ecologist has warned that one of the world’s largest living things, the Pando, a colony of genetically identical trees with a single root system, is in danger of being destroyed for the first time in its long history, the writes New Atlas.
Each tree in the 100-acre (40.5 ha) colony is known to be a clone of each other, meaning they likely have a giant underground root system.
Clonal groups of these tree species are unusual, but the size and age of the Pando make it one of the most unique organisms on the planet. While its individual trees (called trunks) typically only live about 100 years, the Pando’s overall root system is estimated to be 10,000 years old.
Now it may be under threat as human and animal encroachment threatens its ability to produce new stems.
In particular, a 2018 study found that fencing certain areas can be an effective way to preserve the Pando’s ability to regenerate. However, in a new article, Rogers suggests that the enclosure may not be enough to save Pando, as the massive root system shows signs of breaking up into three separate smaller objects.
The main problem Pando faces is deer and cattle, which eat the new stems before they mature, scientists say. This problem originally arose because humans reduced the population of wolves and bear predators in the area over the past century.
Remember that in the newly formed lakes of Alaska there are problems that concern NASA scientists. Reservoirs that come from melting permafrost release methane into the atmosphere.
