A group of Polish and Peruvian archaeologists have discovered a thousand-year-old grave from the Huari culture, containing gold and silver jewelry, from a prominent artisan of ancient Peru.
“We found grave An elite Huari craftsman who was buried with gold and silver dowries” under Huarmei Castle, a famous archaeological site located 290 km north of Lima, Polish head of the investigation team, archaeologist Milos Gers, told AFP.
grave It is about 1300 years old, belongs to a man whom the explorers dubbed “Lord Huarmey” and had several items typical of his trade as an artisan, such as bronze tools, knives, axes, baskets and beautifully decorated chests.
“I am very pleased because for the first time we have found a person and a member of the elite of the Huari culture with preserved objects that are rarely seen in the world, and because they were preserved almost intact,” Gersh said.
An archaeologist and professor at the University of Warsaw described the find as “incredible and important,” the result of excavations that began in 2021 at Huarmey Castle, located in the suburbs of Huarmey, on the coast of the Ancash region.
El Castillo, located a couple of kilometers from the sea, is a kind of stepped pyramid of adobe (clay and straw), towering on a rocky promontory. It is assumed that it was the administrative center of the Huari culture.

“Luxury Clothes”
Since the 17th century, the remains of this pyramid have attracted the attention of visitors from Europe, and in 1999 it was declared the cultural heritage of the nation.
grave It belongs to “a royal court artisan who had luxury clothes,” explained Gears, 45, who has worked in Peru for two decades and speaks fluent Spanish.
Right after grave “Lord Huarmey”, six more graves were found in the galleries of the Castle, including two adult women, two teenagers and a child.
The Huari culture flourished in northern Peru between the 7th and 13th centuries.
I had to dig six meters to find the character in some of the tasks, which also involved other archaeologists and students from the University of Warsaw and the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.
Opening graves It happened in February, but it became known only now.
“A unique find”
“El Castillo was a place where the ancestors of the Wari imperial elite were revered,” Gersh said.
“The place is unique. The necropolis of the highest imperial elite of the Huari with burial mausoleums in the form of multi-storey burial towers on top of a rocky spur,” he explained.
Among the items found were gold and silver earphones, turquoise, knives and finely carved wooden figurines.
“This latest find tells us a lot about the elite during the Huari culture, especially about crafts,” said Polish archaeologist Patricia Pshadka-Hirsh, Gersh’s wife and colleague.
In 2012, the same Polish archaeologists found graves intact statues of 58 Huari noble women, as well as over 1,300 gold and silver items.
Polish archaeologists are working in Huarmi with the support of the University of Warsaw and the mining company Antamina (owned by BHP Billiton, Glencore, Teck and Mitsubishi Corporation), which develops one of the largest copper deposits in the world in the Cordillera region. Ancash.

“Espacio Vital”: A good iron-rich diet can prevent anemia. Dr. Gustavo Rivara, a pediatrician, explained that there are two types of iron: heme, which is found in animal products such as beef, fish, and chicken, which are better absorbed, and non-heme, which is found in vegetables. . When a person eats meat, he absorbs 15 to 30% of iron. And when you eat vegetables, you absorb 5 to 10% of iron, the pediatrician explained. Iron-rich animal foods are primarily liver, followed by red meat, eggs, and blood. And of the vegetables, the richest in iron are legumes, spinach, chard and broccoli, and in order for the iron in these products to be better absorbed, vitamin C is the best ally, such as camu camu, first of all, and all citrus fruits, kiwi, strawberries, watermelon, peppers , tomato. The doctor cited as an example eating meat accompanied by tomatoes and lemon, or onions and lemon, to aid in the absorption of iron.
