The team used imaging algorithms developed at the Event Horizon Telescope to highlight the “photon ring”.

Astronomers have obtained an updated image of the black hole at the center of the galaxy Messier 87 (M87). It shows the “photon ring”, formed by the scattering of photons from a space object. Space.com writes about it.

It was noted that a black hole located 55 million light-years from Earth is depicted in the first image of a black hole captured in 2019 by the Event Horizon telescope. The photo confirmed predictions of what it would look like. However, astronomers failed to see another expected artifact – a thin bright “photon ring”. Just saw him now.

The black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy weighs about 3.5 billion suns. Its disk reaches 0.39 light years, that is, 650 times the distance between the Sun and Pluto.

Black hole

Recall that the Hubble space telescope captured a black hole that does not absorb stars, but stimulates their formation.
