The age of the Macy galaxy is estimated at 20 million years during its existence. It is located 13.5 billion light years from us.
Astronomers at the University of Texas at Austin have found a new candidate for a record distant galaxy that existed when the universe was 286 million years old using the James Webb Observatory’s NIRCam instrument. This is stated on the website of the researchers.
A group of scientists led by Stephen Finkelstein in the infrared on June 21 of this year discovered a galaxy designated CEERSJ141946.35 + 525632.8 or the Macy Galaxy. Its age is estimated to be only 20 million years at the time of observation, and it is located about 13.5 billion light-years from us.
This discovery was unexpected for scientists, because it did not fit most forecasts.
According to astronomers, if subsequent observations confirm the discovery and new similar objects are found, then it can be argued that galaxies in the universe existed less than 300 million years after the Big Bang.
